The Brother MFC-420CN performs the functions of a printer, copier, scanner and fax. Brother also designed the printer to perform automatic diagnostics when experiencing problems . As user end, you can usually decipher most of the error messages that appear on the screen LCD of the printer as “Ink Empty” (Ink Empty) or “No Cartridge” (No cartridge), and then figure out how to solve the inconvenience. However, some printer errors only show two-digit alphanumeric codes, which makes it impossible to diagnose, let alone fix the problem. Remove the paper tray from the printer and set it aside, if any of the following numbers error code appears on the screen LCD: “30” to “39”, “3C” or “3F”. These codes indicate that the printer can not work due to a paper jam. Pull the jammed paper carefully to remove the inner compartment that holds the paper tray. Open the paper tray to make sure the blades are perfectly aligned. Replace the paper tray and try to reprint documents.

Unplug the power cord of the printer from the wall outlet or surge protector, if any of the following error codes on the screen : “40”, “42”, “43” or “44” . These error codes indicate that the internal temperature of the printer might be too high to operate the machine. Allow the printer to cool for about five minutes. Turns the air conditioner or fan to circulate the hot ambient air throughout the room and around the printer. Reconnect the printer into the power outlet and proceeds to use it normally.

Unplug the power cord from the printer if you get the error code “49” on the screen . This indicates that the room temperature is too cold. Temporarily closes the window if the outside temperature is very low. Turn off the air conditioning to allow raise the temperature of the room. Reconnect the printer after about five minutes.

Remove the paper tray if any of the following error codes on the screen : “50”, “51”, “52”, “57”, “5A”, “5B”, “5C”, “5D” and “5E”. These codes indicate that the printer may have a paper jam, but it is also possible that the paper jam sensors are not working properly. Try to find and remove the jammed paper. If you do not find paper, then contact the Brother Customer Service for additional assistance (see Resources).

Contact the Brother customer service immediately if any of the following error codes displayed on the screen : “46”, “48”, “4F”, “8F”, “A5”, “A6”, “A7” , “A8”, “AF”, “E2” and “E3”. These various error codes refer to the printer parts that require further diagnosis. For example, the error “46” refers to the ink absorption pad. This pad keeps the overall health of the printer, but it becomes useless when full.
